Ballard’s magical summer ended Friday afternoon in Flint, with a 2-1 loss in the Western Conference Finals against Ventura County Fusion. Ventura County Fusion rode two first-half goals and a brilliant goalkeeping performance to book a place in the national semi-finals.
Despite a myriad of opportunities and a brilliantly taken Anton Hjalmarsson equalizer, the Bridges couldn’t come up with more heroics in Flint.
This was the fourth Conference Final showdown in the past five seasons between the two squads. Ballard and Ventura have now evenly split their all-time playoff head-to-head at two wins apiece.
The Bridges came in off the back of a palpitating weekend at Interbay Stadium, during which Ballard won two nail-biters, beating Utah United in a shootout and Colorado Storm by a score of 4-3.
Ventura also had to deal with their fair share of adversity in the opening matches of the playoffs, needing a late goal to beat Oakland 510, and trailing against San Francisco City before scoring six straight to advance to yet another Conference Final.
On a warm afternoon in the neutral venue of Atwood stadium in Flint, some early defensive hiccups from Ballard gave Ventura an opportunity to punish. In the 8th minute, a giveaway in the midfield gave Noe Morales-Moya a chance to run at the defense before centering it for Fusion #9 William Pierce, who dispatched the first goal of the match.
Ballard did not waste even a moment getting themselves back in the running. Just a minute after kicking back off, Alexander Villanueva flicked a header forward for Anton Hjalmarsson, who carried the ball half the length of the field straight through the Ventura backline before coolly chipping the keeper to equalize. The goal was Hjalmarsson’s 8th of the season, and his first of the postseason.
The match wouldn’t slow down, with shots on net on both ends in the ensuing minutes forcing the first saves of the match for Ballard’s Noah Newman and Ventura’s Miguel-Angel Hernandez.
After trouble connecting cleanly in the first 10 minutes, Ballard’s goal seemed to energize the team to take control of the match and push for a go-ahead tally.
Hjalmarsson came ever-so close to finding that tally in the 29th, getting behind the back line again for a one-on-one with Hernandez, but this time the Ventura netminder came up with a crucial save.
Despite having to work off the counterattack in the latter stages of the first half, Ventura would still find opportunities. A long-range Miles Merritt effort and quick-break chance for Callen Lewis forced a pair of sprawling saves from Noah Newman in the 36th and 37th minute.
The match went completely end-to-end in the final five minutes of the half, and the tides would turn in the 41st. Seconds after Hernandez once again denied Hjalmarsson from close range, Ventura sprinted down the other end. Newman saved an initial effort from Lewis, but the rebound fell to Jorge Lopez, who was able to turn and fire into the twine, making it 2-1 going into the break.
Needing an offensive spark, Ballard head coach Mutunda Kwesele opted to go to a 4-4-2 in the second half, bringing in NCAA All-American striker Joe Highfield to make it two Portland Pilots in Highfield and Hjalmarsson leading the line for the Bridges.
Once again the match went through frenetic periods in the second half. In the 55th minute, a Ballard header was blocked off the line, springing Ventura forward for a counter that was only denied by a brilliant Angel Martinez sliding challenge.
Miguel-Angel Hernandez once again played hero for Ventura in the 68th, getting in the way of a point-blank Joe Highfield header to maintain the Fusion lead.
In the final stages of the match, Ventura put numbers behind the ball and looked to wear the game down to a 2-1 finish, as Ballard went in search of yet another late magical moment in the 2026 postseason.
Angel Hernandez had one more trick up his sleeve in stoppage time, getting a strong pair of hands up to paw away a vicious Joschi Shelb Volley from ten yards out.
That save was the last push Ventura needed to get over the line, as they avenged a 2-1 loss in 2025 with a 2-1 triumph in 2026 to clinch a spot in the national semis and end Ballard’s season.
